Every year, 8 March, International Women’s Rights Day and Gender Equality Day, is an opportunity for the City of Angers to take stock of the actions undertaken and to set new milestones for collective progress on this issue.

Since 2022, a programme has been drawn up for the whole month of March, entitled “Equality Month”. Led and coordinated by the Equality-Diversity mission, it highlights the events organised by the various departments of the City and the partners in the area.

For its 2023 edition, the programme runs from 4 to 31 March with the theme “Equality, all concerned – being a woman, being a man today, 5 years after MeToo”. Numerous events are organised (concerts, performances, plays, round tables, etc.), to offer a diversity of events that will interest as many people as possible.

As part of Equality Month, Cartooning for Peace is presenting its new exhibition “Dessine-moi l’égalité des genres” (Draw me Gender Equality) from 7 to 31 March at the Toussaint Library (49 rue Toussaint, 49100 Angers, France).

Illustrated with press cartoons from around the world, this exhibition retraces, with humour and commitment, the journey of a lifetime: from birth to old age, it addresses the challenges and persistent problems of gender inequality and shows the long struggle of women for equal rights.

Testimony of an employee of the Toussaint Library: “We have a pinch of users who may have disagreed with the theme (it wouldn’t be funny if they didn’t, but it shows the usefulness of such an exhibition), but on the whole it’s a success, the exhibition is very popular, with people coming from Nantes. Several people have asked for information about hosting it themselves.”

In 2022, in partnership with the city of Angers, Cartooning for Peace exhibited thirty press cartoons in 2022 on the occasion of the congress on gender equality in Europe hosted in Angers. The organisation is delighted to renew this partnership to promote gender equality.

On 28 February, Cartooning for Peace’s educational team worked with local organisations on “Dessine-moi l’égalité des genres”, so that local actors could take ownership of the exhibition and in turn offer mediation to young people in Angers.
