Cartooning for Peace at the 2026 Couthures-sur-Garonne International Journalism Festival

Festival International de Journalisme
France
Couthures-sur-Garonne
10 - 12 juillet 2026

Organised by the editorial teams of Le Monde Group and Le Nouvel Obs, the International Journalism Festival – now in its 10th year – brings together the world’s largest editorial team in all its diversity, featuring representatives from print, TV, online and radio media, alongside international colleagues. News professionals and key figures in the news industry come together to discuss with you – enthusiasts of news and the media – the major issues shaping our society and the role of the media in covering them.

The Festival is structured around seven major themes, explored through debates, meetings and screenings.

This year, Wimar (Cuba) and Kak, president of Cartooning for Peace, are taking part in the following events:

PROGRAMME

Friday 10 July

  • 2.30 pm: ‘Cuba, Donald Trump’s ultimate trophy?’ with Wimar

Already under a US embargo since 1962, the island is suffocating under economic pressure from Washington, exacerbated by the halt in Venezuelan oil supplies following the removal of Nicolás Maduro. How can one survive between the American hammer and the Castroist anvil?

Saturday 11 July

  • 3.30 pm: ‘Press cartoonists under pressure’ with Kak, Wimar and Coco
    Moderator: Antoine Bernard (RSF)

Against a backdrop marked by the rise of authoritarianism and the power of digital platforms, the cases of threats against press cartoonists, identified by Cartooning for Peace in its latest report, cast a harsh light on the state of democracy around the world.

  • 4.30 pm: “Perspectives from photographers and editorial cartoonists” with Kak and Edouard Elias.
    Moderator: Emmanuelle Hascoet

Under threat from fake news, artificial intelligence and the many threats to press freedom, photojournalism and press illustration are distinct forms of expression that share a common function: that of still-image journalism. How does the dialogue between these images, as explored in Cartooning for Peace’s book “La Bascule du monde”, tell us about the world and the times we live in?

Sunday 12 July

  • 3 pm: Workshop: ‘Cartoonist: a real profession’ with Kak

EXHIBITION

Throughout the Festival, the exhibition “Draw Me Gender Equality” is open to the public.

Featuring editorial cartoons from around the world, this exhibition traces, with humour and commitment, the journey of a lifetime: from birth to old age, it addresses the persistent challenges and issues surrounding gender inequality, and highlights women’s long struggle for equal rights.

MURAL

The cartoonists from Cartooning for Peace invite you to join them on Sunday 12 July at 10am to create, live and in front of a live audience, a collaborative (and humorous!) mural with young festival-goers on one of the Festival’s themes, chosen by young people from the Val de Garonne Agglomération.

P’TITE RÉDAC

Throughout the Festival, the cartoonists from Cartooning for Peace will also be working with young festival-goers to run workshops at P’tite Rédac.
