Cartooning for Peace participates in the International Cartoon and Comic Strip Festival, part of the world’s largest Spanish-language book fair: the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL).
Since 2002, these meetings have brought together the leading illustrators and press cartoonists from Mexico and Latin America every year and have established themselves as a landmark event in Mexico and internationally, notably with the presentation of the prestigious La Catrina Cartoon Prize.
The lucky winner for 2025 is Elena Ospina (Colombia), recognised for her rich career. ‘Through her work, Elena Ospina addresses issues such as gender equality, human rights, freedom of expression and ecology. She is also a member of various collectives and associations that promote press cartoons around the world, such as Cartooning for Peace, Cartoon Movement, FECO España and Cartonclub, among others,’ according to the FIL press release.
Elena Ospina will be present alongside a long list of cartoonists who are members of our network, starting with Kak (France), president of Cartooning for Peace, as well as Adene (France), Boligán (Mexico), Bonil (Ecuador), CamdelaFu (Venezuela), Darío (Mexico), Nani (Spain-Colombia), Rayma (Venezuela), Solís (Mexico) and many others. They will all take part in a packed programme of meetings and round tables from 4 to 6 December.
To mark the occasion, a major exhibition entitled ‘Voces ilustradas’ is being held in Guadalajara. Comprising 60 cartoons, it is divided into two main sections: one is devoted to the work of Elena Ospina. The other presents a series of 30 cartoons from around the world, selected by Cartonclub and Cartooning for Peace, to celebrate the importance of a courageous profession and the fight for freedom of the press, with a heartfelt tribute to the victims of the tragic attack on the editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo, which took place 10 years ago in Paris and plunged the whole of France into mourning.
Cartooning for Peace would like to thank all of its Mexican partners and French institutions for their invaluable support, without which this event would not have been possible.
