To mark the 25th edition of Press Cartoon Belgium, Cartooning for Peace is taking part in the debate on the future of news cartoons on 28 June at 9.30am at the Cultural Centre Scharpoord in Knokke-Heist (Belgium). The Belgian panellists will share their experiences as ‘canaries in the coal mine’ of democracy, while the international participants will provide a more global perspective. Together, they will also address the growing pressure on press freedom, the influence of the super-rich on the media sector and the uncertain future of the media and, in particular, of newsrelated cartoons.
Panellists :
Isabel Junius – Moderator (VRT – Canvas, Brussels)
Terry Anderson (Cartoonists Rights, Scotland)
Lars Refn (Denmmark)
Emanuele Del Rosso (Italy)
Vadot (Belgium)
Lectrr (Belgium)
Press cartoonists are like canaries in the coal mine. Their opinions and ideas are immediately represented in their cartoons. Thanks to social media, their cartoons spread quickly, and cartoonists are sometimes also the first to get wind of what’s going on. They are therefore an indicator of changes in the media and in society in general.
We will be discussing the situation of European cartoonists with five cartoonists from northern, western and southern Europe. Since the threats in Denmark 20 years ago and the attack on the Charlie Hebdo committee, organisations like Cartooning for Peace and Cartoonists Rights are needed more than ever, in Europe too.
