Cartooning for Peace is delighted to learn the release of Musa Kart (Winner of the 2018 Cartooning for Peace International Award) and four of his colleagues, former journalists of the Cumhiriyet newspaper.
The Supreme Court of Appeal ordered their release yesterday, September 12.
Members of the editorial staff of the newspaper Cumhuriyet, a rare media outlet critical of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government, were charged with “association with a terrorist organization” and sentenced to serve sentences of 1 to 8 years (1 year and 16 days for Musa Kart, on appeal as of April 2019).
The mobilization of press cartoonists and all the authorities and people who supported their cause is now successful.
