Press Cartoonists in Europe must be protected

Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) partners call for press cartoonists to be protected to ensure they can realise their right to free expression across Europe.

Cartooning for Peace joins the call for the protection of cartoonists launched by the Media Freedom Rapid Response consortium.

Published in response to the numerous cases of attacks on the freedom of expression of cartoonists that have occurred in Europe since the beginning of the COVID-19 health crisis, it recalls the importance, constantly affirmed by Cartooning for Peace, of satire in the democratic space, but also the growing difficulty of exercising this profession today in Europe.

Indeed, one month after being threatened with legal proceedings for a cartoon, the Hungarian cartoonist Gábor Pápai is again under attack from a political representative for a new drawing produced at the beginning of June (read the alert).

Urgent action is now needed to protect the right of cartoonists to free expression and satire in Europe.
