CARTOONIST TAHAR DJEHICHE SENTENCED TO JAIL – Algeria

In November 2015, Algerian cartoonist Tahar Djehiche was sentenced to six months in prison and a fine of 500,000 dinars for “insulting the President” and “inciting mob.” In May 2015, Tahar Djehiche was convicted on appeal and acquitted.

Tahar Djehiche was sentenced because of a cartoon published on social networks, showing Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika drawing showing almost buried by sand of an hourglass. The aim of this cartoon was to warn about the environmental damages related to the exploitation of shale gas in Algeria.
