International day for Human Rights: Press cartoons, a right to be defended

Every December 10, Cartooning for Peace reminds us of the need to defend human rights and fundamental freedoms. An always relevant and universal fight.

This year, more than ever, the association is focusing on threatened cartoonists around the world. The profession is in danger: above all, we all remember the tragedy of Charlie Hebdo that occurred almost 5 years ago…

The New York Times case last June is another symptom of the fragility of the profession, which nevertheless plays a fundamental role in our democracies.

This is why Cartooning for Peace wishes to highlight the importance of the press cartoon and its authors through several concrete actions:

Publication of a practical guide for the protection of editorial cartoonists

Produced with the support of the European Union, designed for cartoonists and available on the Cartooning for Peace website, this document brings together advice and information that can guide those who face specific or persistent threats because of their profession. With tips, testimonies and useful links, it focuses as much on risk prevention as on the response to threats and attacks. Learn more.

Participation in the Media and Development Forum organized by CFI

As part of the “Media and Development” Forum on 11 and 12 December 2019 in Paris, CFI, a French media cooperation agency, is giving space to press cartoons in the debates by associating Cartooning for Peace with the event. The press cartoonists Constant Tonakpa (Benin) and Mykaïa (France) will participate in the debate “Is it still possible to laugh? “moderated by Vladimir Vasak (journalist at Arte) on 11 December at 4.30 pm.

Publication, in partnership with Courrier International, of a special report
on the situation of press cartoonists worldwide

Courrier International, in the issue “2019 en Cartoons” to be published on December 19, publishes a special report produced with Cartooning for Peace. Integrated into the annual review of the year’s news in press cartoons from around the world, the dossier will raise readers’ awareness of the situation of the profession today and the challenges that some press cartoonists may have faced in carrying out their mission in 2019.
