An independent think tank, Villa numeris promotes a European digital model that affirms the primacy of the human factor. A dedicated working group of experts, managers and committed personalities has been set up to develop a framework that is as balanced as possible, enabling the various issues of freedom and public order to coexist harmoniously and effectively.
As Villa numeris points out, our “democracies are distinguished by the guarantees they provide to their citizens of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and not to be harassed for it. In France, this is a constitutional right… The implementation of the European Digital Services Act (DSA) in French law is a pivotal moment for initiating a broader reflection on this subject in view of the democratic, societal and economic issues it entails. The incorporation of the DSA and forthcoming legislation into national law will provide an opportunity to rethink and modernise the French model of online freedom of expression, which we can only note and deplore has been undermined in recent years”.
As part of its mission to support press cartoonists under threat, Cartooning for Peace is involved in this work, as press cartoons are particularly exposed to these issues. The regular involvement of press cartoonists in these discussions helps to deepen mutual understanding and reflection on these issues, which are fundamental to the defence of freedom of expression.
