As it does every year, Cartooning for Peace is supporting World Press Freedom Day, which UNESCO has decided to dedicate this year to the decisive influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism and the media, under the theme: ‘Informing in a new world – The impact of artificial intelligence on press freedom and the media’.
The aim of 3 May is to remind governments of the need to honour their commitment to press freedom, and to provide a day for media professionals to reflect on issues relating to press freedom and professional ethics. It is also a day of support for the media and press freedom, and a day of commemoration for journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
To mark the occasion, the exhibition ‘Artificial intelligence: a (r)evolution?’ is being presented at IHECS.
Through it, Cartooning for Peace is presenting a series of press cartoons from around the world to help us grasp the issues at the heart of the deployment of artificial intelligence, always with a sense of humour and… intelligence!
Cartooning for Peace is also taking part in two parallel events, showing press cartoons from its book ‘Artificial intelligence: a (r)evolution?’ to enrich the discussions:
6 May, 9.45am to 11.15am, IHECS, Auditorium Velge, 58 rue de l’Etuve, Brussels
Organised by Reporters Without Borders and Fundación para libertad de prensa, the aims of the roundtable are to advocate for stronger regulatory frameworks and democratic oversight to hold technology companies accountable; to pump up collaboration between journalists, policy-makers and AI experts to protect independent climate journalism; explore the opportunities offered by AI to boost independent environmental journalism and amplify the spread of reliable, fact-based journalism on climate issues.
Speakers:
Moderator: Antoine Bernard, Director, Advocacy, Litigation and Assistance (RSF)
6 May, 5 pm to 7.30 pm, BIP Meeting Center, Salle des guichets, Brussels, Belgium
The UNESCO Culture Sector, the UNESCO Liaison Office in Brussels and the UNESCO-Aschberg Programme for Artists and Cultural Professionals are organising a side event on the theme of ‘Artistic Freedom and Creativity: Navigating AI in a Volatile World’. The debate addresses critical challenges at the intersection of technology and artistic expression and encourages discussions on safeguarding and promoting creativity in the AI era while drawing attention to other enduring and evolving issues that impact artistic freedom worldwide.
