War in Ukraine: winter as a weapon of war

Tenth month of war and the Russian bombings continue to fall on the infrastructures and civilian populations. The town of Bakhmut was savagely shelled by the Russian army and emptied of its inhabitants in a few days. In the middle of a harsh winter, Ukrainians have to face the lack of electricity, water, heating… as if the bombs were not enough.

On Tuesday 13 December, Paris hosted 47 countries and 22 organisations and financial institutions at an international conference in support of Ukraine (one billion euros in donations have been promised). Volodymyr Zelensky (named “Personality of the Year” by “Time”), who has been demanding an air shield from his Western allies for months, has just obtained the delivery of “Patriot” anti-aircraft missile batteries from the United States.

With Christmas approaching, the Ukrainian resistance commands respect. But winter is not over…
