“A travesty of justice,” said Donald Trump on June 13, as the congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol released its initial findings on June 10. Composed of seven Democrats and two Republicans, the commission directly targets the former U.S. president as the instigator of this attack, which it describes as an “attempted coup”. In a lengthy statement, however, Donald Trump persists in his lies, against the facts. American democracy remains deeply weakened by this unprecedented episode and the threat of a re-election of the former president hangs over the country.
