Tensions and lassitude as the end of year celebrations approach. A year ago, we were talking about a Christmas like no other, convinced that the arrival of vaccines would definitively put a stop to the pandemic.
But that was without counting on the multiple variants, the epidemic rebounds in the world… and the dreaded arrival of Omicron, while the 5th wave of the Delta variant is still in progress.
Governments, now experienced in the exercise, are forced to adopt new measures as the holidays approach to limit the damage. Indeed, the Omicron variant, which appeared in South Africa, seems to be more contagious than the previous ones. Health authorities are urging people to get vaccinated to avoid severe forms of the disease and overloading hospitals (the vast majority of Covid patients hospitalized are not vaccinated).
Tensions between the vaccinated and the anti-vax are exacerbated, while many countries – especially in Africa – are still waiting for their first dose of vaccine. In short, family meals are going to be lively… Merry Christmas anyway!
