As stated in the 2019 World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), “hatred of journalists has degenerated into violence, contributing to an increase in fear. The number of countries regarded as safe, where journalists can work in complete security, continues to decline, while authoritarian regimes continue to tighten their grip on the media”.
Today, April 25, it is with great anger and sadness that Cartooning for Peace has just learned that Turkish cartoonist Musa Kart, and some of his former colleagues from the newspaper Cumhuriyet, are on their way to Kandira prison to serve their sentence (more info here).
On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, organized by UNESCO, the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the African Union, Cartooning for Peace is actively participating in this international meeting by bringing together 26 cartoonists from all over the world, particularly from Africa, to remind us how much press freedom is one of the pillars of our democracies (more info here).
