Iran: the policy of terror

Editorial published on January 12, 2023

Four months ago, Mahsa Amini was killed by the morality police. Since then, Iran has been living with the rhythm of popular protest and its violent repression. The anger, first of women and then of all citizens opposed to the regime, has crystallized around the figure of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. An opposition illustrated in France by the 4 January 2023 issue of Charlie Hebdo devoted to international caricatures of the Supreme Leader.

Since the beginning of the uprising, 20,000 people have been arrested, 17 have been sentenced to death and 109 are awaiting a similar verdict (according to official figures provided by the Iran Justice Collective).

The demonstrators are entitled to summary trials, the penalties for which are applied immediately. Hanging has become a tool of repression and desperate propaganda of the mullahs’ regime, which has rarely been this cruel.

The dramatic situation in Iran is being reported around the world but the international community does not seem to want to intervene, even though the UN denounces “state killings”.

Cartooning for Peace’s cartoonists, who have been mobilized since September, continue to support Iran’s insubordination (more info here).
