5 years after #MeToo, the Iranian women’s revolution

Editorial published on October 07, 2022
In October 2017, the Weinstein affair, unveiled by the New York Times, gave birth to a global mobilization movement to denounce sexual violence and assault against women. A salutary liberation of the word, which was embodied under the rallying hashtag #MeToo and has moved the lines, even if the fight remains of a burning actuality.
For the past several weeks, it has been Iranian women who have also been leading a major revolution. Since the tragic death on September 16 of Mahsa Amini, arrested by the morality police for not having worn her veil properly and died in hospital in more than dubious conditions, the courage of Iranian women commands respect: followed by young people, they are mobilizing in the street at the risk of their lives. Defying the ultra-violent repression of the regime, they take off their veils, cut their hair to demand the freedom they do not have and denounce the dictatorship of the Mullahs… until it is overthrown?
