Death of Queen Elizabeth: the United Kingdom in mourning

Just a few days after the death of Mikhail Gorbachev, another monument of history passed away this Thursday afternoon. At the age of 96, Queen Elizabeth II of England died in her castle in Balmoral (Scotland). The announcement had the effect of a global explosion. Newspapers, radio and television stations around the world have been running special editions to cover the event. Tributes from international leaders have been pouring in and the British have been gathering outside Buckingham Palace to pay their last respects. Last June, her Platinum Jubilee was still being celebrated for her 70 years of reign… A ten-day national mourning period has been declared by the British government, while the funeral protocol, which has been meticulously prepared for a long time, unfolds. King Charles III will be officially proclaimed King on the Saturday 10th of September, at the age of 73.
