On Sunday, May 23, a Ryanair airliner from Athens to Vilnius was hijacked by a fighter jet to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, on the pretext of a bomb threat.
On board, the Belarusian journalist Roman Protassevitch, an opponent of Alexander Lukashenko’s regime (and qualified as a “terrorist” by the latter), was arrested.
While Russia supports its Belarusian ally, Europe immediately reacted by closing its airspace to Belarus as a sanction and is asking, along with the United States, for an urgent investigation by the International Civil Aviation Organization, which is due to meet on Thursday 27 May.
