On September 11, 2001, between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., airliners were hijacked by the jihadist network Al-Qaeda and crashed into the famous twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, as well as the U.S. Pentagon in Washington DC, before the incredulous and frightened eyes of the entire planet.
In less than two hours, the human toll was unprecedented: 2977 dead and 6291 injured. The sensation of a before and after and images that are hardly believable, now engraved in the collective unconscious of humanity.
We know what happened next: the United States promised a war against terrorism and a month later invaded Afghanistan, the operational headquarters of Al Qaeda, overthrowing the Taliban regime. Then the invasion of Iraq, the overthrow of Sadam Hussein (arrested by American special forces in 2003 and dead in 2006). Then the tracking down and death of Osama bin Laden in 2011 in Pakistan…
After 20 years of war in Afghanistan, the American troops withdraw and leave Kabul on August 30, 2021. The Taliban have regained control of the country. We commemorate the tragic anniversary of the September 11 attacks and we are still looking for the meaning of history…
