Afghanistan: the trap is closing

Editorial published on August 31, 2021

The last American troops left Kabul, the Afghan capital, on the night of August 30-31, 24 hours before the deadline announced by U.S. President Joe Biden in April. Twenty years after their defeat, the Taliban reconquered the country in a few days and entered Kabul on August 15. Since then, images of extreme panic have been broadcast around the world: on the airport tarmac, thousands of desperate Afghans are ready to do anything to board a plane and flee the country. On August 26, on the outskirts of the airport, a suicide bombing, claimed by the Islamic State, killed over 180 people.
The international community is trying to organize itself to welcome the many refugees who have managed to leave. Experts wonder about this American and, by extension, Western failure. All that for this!
It is especially the fate of women and children that raises the most fears: the Taliban may have assured that their rights will be respected, but the UN has the right to doubt it…
