75 years ago, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

This 10 December, World Human Rights Day, marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on 10 December 1948, in the aftermath of the Second World War.

At a time when war and its attendant tragedies are still reverberating around the world, Cartooning for Peace is reminding us that the defence of human rights is more relevant than ever, with its “Enjeux Humains” exhibition at the Cité Miroir in Liège (Belgium), running until 28 January 2024.

Freedom of expression is at the heart of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and press cartoonists are among the bravest defenders of this fundamental freedom, which is often trampled underfoot. On this symbolic date, Cartooning for Peace looks back at the threats they face in its latest report, “Cartoonists on the line”, presented on 8 December at a meeting in Ghent (Belgium), and in the “Tough Laugh x Tough Law” project, a series of podcasts on the dangers they face to make us laugh and think.
