As it does every year, Cartooning for Peace is mobilising to mark World Press Freedom Day, which UNESCO has dedicated this year to the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the environmental crisis. As the UN rightly points out, “awareness of all aspects of the global environmental crisis and its consequences is essential to building democratic societies, and journalistic work is indispensable to this end. Journalists therefore face major challenges when seeking out and disseminating information on topical issues such as supply chain problems, climate migration, extractive industries, illegal mining, pollution, poaching, animal trafficking, deforestation and climate change. Ensuring the visibility of these issues is crucial to promoting peace and democratic values around the world”.
Cartooning for Peace’s press cartoons illustrate all these issues and, in a joint awareness-raising campaign with Unesco, they also alert us to the dangers of misinformation about the climate crisis.
