European Parliament resolution on the “Protection of journalists around the world and the European Union’s policy on the matter”

Cartooning for Peace welcomes the European Parliament’s resolution of 11 July 2023 on the “Protection of journalists in the world and the European Union’s policy on the matter” and is delighted to have been able to contribute to it.

Echoing the 2019 Addis Ababa Declaration put forward by Xavier Gorce (Belgium) with the support of the organisation, the resolution specifically recalls “the obligation to protect freedom of expression, including for satirists and cartoonists” in their mission to inform, defend and promote fundamental freedoms and highlight abuses of power.

At a time when the repression and censorship of press cartoonists, journalists and artists is increasing all over the world, often with complete impunity, and when disinformation is flourishing, it is urgent and fundamental to protect them so that everyone’s right to freedom of expression, opinion and information is guaranteed.
This requires, among other things, greater collaboration between all those involved in promoting freedom of expression and defending fundamental freedoms.
