“Human rights, for when?” – Mainstream exhibition

Human rights news depicted by press cartoonists

“The exhibition highlights the founding principle that we are all born free and equal in rights. It invites visitors to make real the vision of hope, freedom and universalism embodied in the Universal Declaration.” Extract from the introduction by Dunja Mijatović, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights

70 years ago, on 10 December 1948, the 58 Member States of the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Paris, at the Palais Chaillot. A declaration of 30 articles which, as stated in its preamble, constitutes “a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations”.

This was the wish expressed by the international community in the aftermath of a Second World War that had reached the heights of barbarism. Was it pious? Current events show us that there is still a long way to go and that defending human rights is a daily battle.

Press cartoonists, in direct contact with the news, are undoubtedly in the best position to sound the alarm when these rights are flouted. That’s why Cartooning for Peace is keen to offer this exhibition to the public.

Comprising a series of 30 press cartoons, the exhibition is punctuated by quotes from Christiane Taubira, former Minister of Justice under the presidency of François Hollande, in the preface to the publication of the same title, published by Gallimard.

Civil rights, political rights, legal rights, social rights, economic rights… the exhibition explores the different families of rights in a concrete and contemporary approach that invites reflection and, perhaps, even action.

The aim is also to show that the fight for human rights is embodied in the lives of certain men and women whose commitment has set an unfailing example.
