The rise of authoritarianism poses a serious threat to democratic values and respect for human rights around the world. Journalists—including editorial cartoonists—are on the front lines as the geographical space in which freedom of expression and freedom of the press can still coexist as guarantors of democratic life continues to shrink.
This event provides an overview of this global shift based on the findings and trends identified in the 2026 edition of Reporters Without Borders’ World Press Freedom Index, as well as the latest reports from the Platform for the Safety of Journalists and Cartooning for Peace and its partners. The event also sheds light on the European context in light of the shift in American democracy toward the worst forms of authoritarianism.
