December 10, 2024 marks Human Rights Day and the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. Over the past year, half the world’s population has voted to elect new leaders. In many cases, unfortunately, populism, extremism and anti-human rights movements won the day or achieved record results. The year was also marked by war, in Ukraine, the Middle East, Sudan and elsewhere, wars in which fundamental rights, particularly those of the most vulnerable, are systematically flouted, in defiance of international law and human dignity. The fight for human rights, often called into question, remains essential to preserve the common basis of our humanity and peace in the world.
