9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty

9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty
France
PARIS
30 june 2026 – 2 july 2026

Organised by Ensemble contre la peine de mort, the World Congress Against the Death Penalty is the leading international event dedicated to universal abolition. Held every three years, it brings together all those involved in this campaign: politicians, judges, lawyers, diplomats, civil society organisations, international experts, and eyewitnesses.

Over the course of three days, the Congress provides a unique forum for dialogue, reflection and mobilisation. It offers an opportunity to share experiences, analyse current trends and develop joint strategies. The Congress also helps to strengthen international cooperation, encourage political commitment and support the drive towards abolition. Finally, it helps to break the isolation of many committed activists, who are sometimes at risk in their own countries, and to strengthen their capacity for action in the long term.

The objectives of the Congress are:
Bring together abolitionists from around the world \ Encourage concrete progress and commitments towards universal abolition \ Support cooperation between political leaders and civil society \ Raise awareness of the realities of the death penalty \ Support young people who are actively involved in the abolition movement \ Combat discrimination, prevent the resurgence of the death penalty and protect fundamental rights.

“DRAWING, RESISTING”, an exhibition by Ensemble contre la peine de mort and Cartooning for Peace

The result of a collaboration between these two organisations, the exhibition brings together twenty press cartoons by sixteen cartoonists from a variety of backgrounds. Through their unique and complementary perspectives, the works examine the death penalty and its human, social and political consequences. Each piece demonstrates the power of press cartoons to expose injustices, raise questions and spark debate.
In a world where the death penalty is often fading from public view, editorial cartoons strive to keep it in the spotlight. Where words are sometimes met with indifference or censorship, a pencil sketch can capture the imagination, circumvent obstacles, cross borders, intensify the debate and appeal to reason.
