Every year, Cartooning for Peace and UNESCO join forces to celebrate World Press Freedom Day.
In 2024, Chile will be hosting the 31st edition from 2 to 4 May, devoted to “the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis”.
As UNESCO points out in its press release, “the climate crisis (…) is disrupting not only the environment and ecosystems, but also the lives of billions of people around the world. These stories of upheaval and loss deserve to be known and shared (…). This is why the role of journalists is crucial. It is through their work, their courage and their perseverance that we can find out what is really happening in different parts of the world. They are on the front line of our collective fight for the health of our planet and our fight for livable lives”.
All these messages are illustrated by Cartooning for Peace’s press cartoons, which, as part of an awareness-raising campaign in partnership with UNESCO, also warn us about the dangers of misinformation surrounding the climate crisis.
Guada, a young Chilean cartoonist, illustrates the discussions at this 31st conference live.
