Venezuela: how to avoid a shipwreck?

Editorial published on January 25, 2019

On January 10, Nicolás Maduro began his second six-year presidential term, even though the elections of May 20, 2018 that brought him to power were contested by the opposition and part of the international community.

Juan Guaidó, MP and President of the National Assembly (controlled by the opposition), proclaimed himself interim President at a meeting in Caracas on January 23, a symbolic day in Venezuela, as it marks the end of Marcos Pérez Jiménez’s dictatorship. A member of Voluntad Popular (right party) and relatively unknown in politics, Guaidó called for free elections and immediately received support from the United States, Canada, several Latin American countries and, since 31 January, the European Parliament. Maduro, who denounced a new coup attempt by the United States, has the support of the army, as well as Cuba, Mexico, Russia and Turkey.

Demonstrations continue and more than 40 deaths are already reported as Venezuela becomes bogged down in a deep political crisis.
