United States: return on the “worst debate in American history”.

Editorial published on October 01, 2020

The first of the three debates of the American presidential election, pitting incumbent President Donald Trump against Democratic candidate Joe Biden, announces the color of the next few weeks and confirms the deplorable state of American democracy.
Instead of a substantive debate on political programs, American voters have witnessed a duel that experts agree to define as “the worst debate in American history” and come out of it very disappointed overall. Insults, invective and attacks of all kinds were hurled. Biden did try to keep a bit of height but sometimes gave in to the violence of the White House tenant’s words, who, in the event of defeat, refused to engage in a peaceful transfer of power. To hear such comments, in the midst of a presidential campaign in one of the world’s largest democracies, is enough to make the whole world shudder.
