Under threat, Taiwan seeks allies

Taiwan, on the verge of annexation by China, is looking to the US for support. During a trip to South America this week, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party, is expected to meet informally with Kevin McCarthy, the speaker of the US House of Representatives.

China is offended by this “provocation”, having already responded to the visit of the American Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in August 2022 with military exercises around the island. Under the “one China” principle, Xi Jinping had declared that China would “never renounce the use of force” to reunify Taiwan.

These high political tensions between Taipei and Beijing, in the run-up to decisive presidential and parliamentary elections in Taiwan in January 2024, herald a potential and dangerous conflict.
