The sea, that we see dance…

Summer is here and, with it, as Charles Trenet sang, the sea… “The one that we see dance along the clear-water bays”…. Except they’re not very clear anymore, our gulfs. Sea pollution is a growing and alarming phenomenon. The Mediterranean, one of the most polluted seas in the world, is full of plastic waste (more than 600 tonnes of plastic per year) that seriously contaminates marine life and, consequently, the entire food chain.

The sea and its idyllic postcards inspire relaxation and escape… It is also the site of an often tragic escape: that of the thousands of migrants fleeing war, famine, drought and poverty by crossing the Mediterranean in makeshift boats in an attempt to find a future in Europe. However, they must not perish in the crossing (17,000 dead and missing in the Mediterranean since 2014)…. “The sea rocked them along the clear gulfs,” Trenet sang…
