The intensification of strikes on the Gaza Strip by the Israeli army, which has begun its ground operation to destroy the military capabilities of Hamas and repatriate hostages, continues to claim victims and raise debates around the world. On Tuesday 31 October, the bombing of the Jabaliya refugee camp, intended to eliminate a Hamas leader, left a huge crater and caused dozens of civilian deaths, according to Hamas’s own hard-to-verify figures. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed “grave concern that these were disproportionate attacks that could constitute war crimes”.
To escape the deluge of bombs, many Palestinian civilians have been forced to head for southern Gaza and the Rafha crossing into Egypt. Bitter negotiations are taking place to speed up this evacuation, which many consider to be too slow, and which for the moment only concerns the wounded and those with dual nationality.
