The Arab Spring in Syria has led to a dramatic civil war that has lasted for 10 years: nearly 400,000 dead, more than 6 million Syrians exiled, a country in ruins, a devastated economy … And Bashar al-Assad, still in power although accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Syrian state has regained control of more than 70% of its territory at the cost of untold human tragedies. We remember in particular the terrible chemical attacks in 2013 against the Syrian population.
The opposition, very divided, has not succeeded in making the “butcher of Damascus”, supported by his Russian and Iranian allies, bend. The jihadist threat persists and the UN, ten years on, remains powerless.
The prospects for reconstruction are very poor and the end of the tunnel is still far away…
