The women overthrew Omar Al-Bashir…. You’d think it is a joke. However, this is largely the reality. For several months now, Sudanese women have been mobilizing to claim their rights and freedoms in a society locked by tyrannical power.
In a few days, a 22-year-old Sudanese woman, Alaa Salah, became the muse of this protest movement, immortalized in an iconic photograph that travelled around the world in less than 24 hours. Women are at the heart of this unprecedented mobilization that led to the dismissal of Omar Al-Bashir by the army on April 11, after three decades of authoritarian rule.
As in Algeria, the country is undergoing a decisive turnaround: the power of the army, which is managing the transition, risks disappointing the democratic aspirations of a civil society that remains mobilized.
