France’s involvement in the Rwandan genocide

On April 7, 2021, Rwanda commemorated 27 years since the tragic genocide in which one million Tutsis lost their lives between April 7 and July 17, 1994.
On March 26, at the request of French President Emmanuel Macron, a commission of historians, headed by Vincent Duclert, submitted a damning report on the role of France and its then president – François Mitterrand – in this criminal enterprise. Rwandan President Paul Kagame considers the Duclert report “an important step towards a common understanding of what happened. Although the report exonerates France from the accusation of “complicity”, it shows how much responsibility it bears, through its support for the then Hutu president Juvénal Habyarimana, in this dark period of recent history.
