Russia: the Navalny case

Editorial published on February 04, 2021

Vladimir Putin’s main opponent, Alexei Navalny was poisoned in Novichok on August 20, 2020 and hospitalized in intensive care for a month in Berlin, where he spent his long convalescence. On January 13, he announced his return to Russia and upon his arrival at Moscow airport on January 17, he was arrested.
Since then, Navalny’s supporters have demonstrated en masse to demand his release. Harshly repressed by the authorities, thousands of Russians have been arbitrarily arrested in undignified conditions.
On February 2, Navalny was sentenced to three and a half years in prison by a Moscow court, which accused him of violating his judicial control. The international community denounced this unacceptable sentence and demanded his immediate release. And the European Union, which strongly condemns this violation of human rights, finds itself at a great disadvantage in its strategic relationship with Moscow.
