Refugees from the Ukraine war

Editorial published on March 04, 2022

The war in Ukraine continues in full swing with the advance of Russian forces into the country, which, although confronted by courageous Ukrainian resistance, is confirmed every day in the east, south and north.
One million Ukrainian refugees have already fled the country in one week, according to the UN, which on Wednesday 2 March adopted a resolution demanding “that Russia immediately cease the use of force against Ukraine”.
The European Union will apply for the first time a 2001 directive allowing “temporary protection” to Ukrainian refugees. A strong gesture of solidarity that contrasts with the recent reluctance of some Central and Eastern European countries to welcome Syrian or Afghan refugees… This is all the more true as several sources (including the International Organization for Migration) have noted these days, at the border between Ukraine and Poland, violent discrimination against certain candidates for departure of African or Asian origin, turned back at the border.
