Will the next presidential campaign in France be as capricious as the American one? The question needs to be asked… For the right-wing and for the left-wing parties the situation is unprecedented, even surreal!
On January 29, Benoit Hamon won the primaries of the Socialist Party (PS). This result embarrasses the whole party since a major part of the voters seem to prefer the independent candidate Emmanuel Macron, former Minister of the Economy until August 2016.
Since January 31st, Le Canard enchainé (The Chained Duck, a weekly newspaper that mixes satire and investigations) has been publishing some shocking revelations about François Fillon, the right-wing candidate (Les Républicains). His wife, Penelope Fillon, is suspected of having a bogus job. She would have received more than 900,000 euros as parliamentary assistant to her husband and as an employee of La Revue des Deux Mondes. Also two of their children are accused of receiving 84,000 euros as parliamentary aides. Let’s wait for the results of the judicial inquiry.
The cards of this campaign are definitely blurred… Who is going to reshuffle?
