Mexico/USA: the Wall of Contention

Editorial published on February 24, 2017

Since the arrival of the new administration in the White House, the diplomatic relations between the United States and Mexico are roughly threaten after Trump’s statements about the wall he wants to raise along the Mexican border.

This week, the Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and John Kelly, Secretary of Homeland Security, achieved their first official visit in Mexico in order to meet the President Enrique Peña Nieto. They discussed the undocumented migrants expulsions that will certainly multiply after the ratification of the last migratory decrees. Around 5.7 millions of Mexicans live today illegally in the United States, and their return would be quite hard to manage for Mexico.

About their trade exchanges, the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) renegotiation wanted by Trump would weaken even more the Mexican economy, being deeply dependent of its northern neighbor : 80% of Mexican exports are intended to the USA.

Throughout this first meeting, the wall issue didn’t show up. This construction, whose estimated cost is around 21 billion dollars, should be financed by Mexico according to Trump. Even if Peña Nieto has already declared that his country won’t pay for it, this topic will obviously be brought back on the table…
