2023 begins with violence in the United-States

Police violence, tinged with racism, has become common. In just three weeks, two black men have been killed by police officers in controversial circumstances: Tyre Nichols and Anthony Lowe. The former was beaten to death during a roadside check on January the 7th. The second, who had both legs amputated and was mentally ill, was shot dead on January 26th following a knife attack.

As if that wasn’t enough, the country has been plagued by six “mass shootings” since the beginning of the year. Gun killings, especially isolated, unpredictable ones affecting vulnerable populations such as schoolchildren, have been rising sharply over the past two decades. Faced with this increase, which has accelerated with COVID, 71% of Americans are calling for stricter regulation of gun sales, according to a study by the University of Chicago. Nevertheless, 51% of them are not prepared to give up the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, which guarantees them the right to own a firearm.
