France troubled by pension reform

Editorial published on January 27, 2023

While it has still not been voted on, the pension reform has become the symbol of the Macron government’s policy, committed to adapting the financing of pensions with the demographic evolution of France. But the reform is being debated by experts and crystallises all the political tensions in the country, which is already weakened by rising inflation and the energy crisis.

The extension of legal retirement age to 64 (in Europe, the retirement age is higher overall), job insecurity and hardship, work for senior citizens… These are the reasons to unite all the unions and to set in motion multiple strikes and protests. From abroad, we once again observe with curiosity the French, who are known for their rebellious spirit.
