Hong Kong, under the tentacles of Beijing

The months of mobilization of the pro-democracy movement known as “umbrellas” will not have done anything about it. Beijing confirmed the trend and regained control over this territory, a former British colony that was ceded back to China in 1997, which enjoyed a special regime, the famous “One country, two systems”.
Hong Kong’s much-feared National Security Act was officially promulgated on Tuesday 30 June. It provides for the repression of “separatism”, “terrorism” and “collusion with outside and foreign forces”. In other words: any dissent. The very next day, hundreds of pro-democracy demonstrators were arrested…
The international community condemns this freedom-destroying law that threatens Hong Kong’s autonomy, while London is considering extending access to British citizenship for the inhabitants of the autonomous region. In the meantime, HongKongers face a dilemma (which cartoonists know well!): self-censorship or forced departure…
