A page will soon be turned in Germany (and in Europe!). After four terms in office and a remarkable 16 years in power, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is stepping down.
The Germans voted this Sunday, September 26, to elect the person who will succeed the chancellor. The suspense is still there because of the particularly close results: the SPD candidate, Olaf Scholz, came out on top by a narrow margin (with 25.7 per cent of the vote), ahead of Armin Laschet of Merkel’s CDU party (which recorded its lowest score with 24.1 per cent of the vote).
Long months of negotiations lie ahead to form a coalition in which the Greens (Grüne) and the Liberals (FDP) will be the kingmakers. The “Mutti” Merkel will have to wait a little longer…
