After an unprecedented campaign, marked by the scandal of affairs, the internal division between the two principal parties (Les Républicains and the Parti socialiste) and the emergence of new political movements, French people have chosen two finalists for the presidential race! The results of the first round, on April 23rd, gave 24.01% of votes to Emmanuel Macron (from the “En Marche !” movement) and 21,3% of votes for Marine Le Pen (from the National Front party), confirming the previous polls.
The far right shadow hangs out again, as in the presidential election of 2002 .
But 15 years later, the context has changed and the country has to face new challenges (terrorist threat, migrants influx, increasing inequalities, European crisis…) and tensions are strong. Even if a large part of voters seems to have the determination to vote against the National Front, in the name of the “republican front”, many others could abstain or cast a blank vote for the second round, on May 7th.
