On Friday, February 14, Benjamin Griveaux, candidate of the presidential party La République En Marche (LREM) at the Paris City Hall, had to withdraw his candidacy. The reason: videos of a sexual nature infringing on his private life were posted on the Internet without his agreement.

An investigation is under way and two people have already been indicted and placed under judicial supervision for having contributed to the dissemination of these videos: the Russian artist Piotr Pavlenski, a refugee in France (known for his performances) and his campaign Alexandra de Taddeo.

Since then, French society has been questioning the sometimes destructive role of social networks when they become the site of cyber-harassment and weaken our democratic base. George Orwell’s “Big Brother is watching you” is more topical than ever…
