Fillon’s case: assassination or political suicide ?

Editorial published on March 03, 2017

On Wednesday March 1st, François Fillon, Les Republicain’s candidate for the French presidency canceled at the last minute his visit to the Paris Agriculture Show, compulsory step for every French political figure. In the wake, a press conference has been organized at his headquarters.

Fillon persists: he remains as a candidate for the presidency despite of the judges’ convocation for his indictment received yesterday. He denounces a “political assassination” committed by the judicial institution.

If his campaign was already weakened by the Canard enchainé’s revelations, his future in the presidential race now appears quite grim. Some members of his campaign’s team have already broken ranks. He also risks not receiving the sufficient support from his political family, which is now anticipating a catastrophic scenario for the first round of the elections.

One thing is certain: this presidential campaign has not finished to astonish by its turnarounds; still, the pronostics remain open….
