The 15th United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP15), chaired by China, starts on Wednesday 7 December and ends on Monday 19 December. Postponed several times due to the Covid-19 pandemic and China’s “zero Covid” policy, the conference has been moved from Kunming (China) to Montreal (Canada). This is a highly anticipated COP where 196 states from around the world must jointly establish a global action plan by 2030 to safeguard biodiversity. The planet is on the verge of a sixth mass extinction: a million plant and animal species are currently threatened with extinction.
The hopes of this COP15 are therefore decisive for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity because, as a reminder, none of the objectives of COP10 in Nagoya (Japan) have been fully achieved in 10 years. Let’s hope that the solutions are more convincing this time…
