Since the beginning of the year, thousands of victims have died. As if that wasn’t enough, the coronavirus pandemic has also put a damper on the global economy that has probably never been seen before. Containment has led to the temporary halting of economic activity in many countries, which are now operating at a low level.
As the epidemic peaked, stock market curves fell and unemployment figures soared in no time at all. Political leaders are faced with both health and economic imperatives, with all the social consequences that this entails and the risk of further widening inequalities, to the detriment of the most precarious.
