Bakhmut: Symbol of the war in Ukraine, in ruins

Editorial published on May 24, 2023

After Verdun and Stalingrad, Bakhmut is now being compared to Hiroshima, in the words of President Zelensky, who was visiting the Japanese city for the G7: “There is nothing left alive […] absolute and total destruction.”

Since the spring of 2022, Bakhmut, a Donbass town with a population of 70,000, has been the scene of the most violent battle of the war in Ukraine. It has become the symbolic cursor of the evolution of the front, the city not to be lost. It is also the battle that put Wagner’s troops on the map, who, at the cost of deadly strategies, finally “took” the city on 20 May and should deliver it to the Russian army. The Ukrainian troops deny this, and claim that they are continuing to resist on the outskirts of Bakhmut, which has become a field of ruins.
